    Hi, Eric

What save process & file type did you use?

This looks like normal 8-bit banding, but I can't tell if it happened during capture or post-processing.

    Re: Andromeda Galaxy

it was taken using jpeg format and saved all images, im still having troubles coverting FITS files or TIF files, i need a good tutorial on those types of files, the programs i have to work with are PS CS3, Maxim DL, Registax, and deepspace stacker. i did FITS3p and FITS files last night, but then went back to JPEG only due to thats the type of file i know how to use the best out of the three. now i still have those FITS files, mabey i could email them zipped up and send them to you .just to see what you could do with them? it would be neat to see what you could come up with?

    thanks,Eric

    Re: Andromeda Galaxy

Sure, I would be happy to take a look. I have cable broadband so file size is not an issue.

The thing you are fighting here is this portion of the galaxy is a very slow, smooth transition from very bright to fairly dim - it takes LOTS of shades of gray to depict that without creating the banding artifacts you are seeing (perfect example of why we like to use fits).

Other than mono, what did you change?

    Re: Andromeda Galaxy

I saved the images as Jpeg, only because im not sure how to convert the RGBL images properly, i have Maxim DL and Photoshop CS3 and registax, so after a bit of focusing, i shot 27/1 min images, im thinking about shooting a series of images at 30 min at a time over the period of a few clear nights and then stack them all and hope for the best, i am getting a Astronomic CLS filter in a couple days, so im looking forward to using it for imaging, to much light polution even in my backyard OBS, oh and i got a motorfocus from JMI, cant wait for that to arrive!

    Re: Andromeda Galaxy

I gues my only suggestion here would be to consider using BMP instead of JPG. The BMP format is "lossless", but otherwise it is about as easy to work with as JPG.

    Re: Andromeda Galaxy

Hi Guys, could I make a suggestion re fits, what I do is I save all uncombined fit3p then to break up the boredom while the image is being taken I open meads image processing software load the fits image and then save display as BMP then I can look in PS3 to see what it looks like.

All I do in the meade image proc prog is open the fits I don't adjust anything this just lets me see how the image is doing.

    Hope this helps

    Re: Andromeda Galaxy

i seem to have things coming along okay right now, my biggest issue is after i do drift alignment i noticed drifting either to the left of the image or the right of the image, come to find out i need to be guiding in order to not get that, at least thats was i'm geussing, so i ordered a scope for guiding and that should be here tonight, now its just a matter of getting PHD Guiding to work properly, i tried it with my finder scope but after the calibration it gives me an error that says RA calabration failed..star did not move enough, which leads me to belive the finder scope isnt powerful enough to bring the guiding star in close enough to detect any movement, either that or my scope and mount is spot on polar aligned, but im opting for the first issuse of the funder scope not being powerful enough, the short tube i bought is 500mm, so with any luck tonight i should be putting out some nice images(cross my fingers)

ps. this is from last night

    29-60 sec images

    Hey, nice image, Eric!

Good luck with the guider...plan to spend a couple of nights getting it set up & working well. It will be well worth the effort.

thanks Chuck! that image was taken with the new Orion Shorty piggybacked on my 8"

your so right about spending a couple nights getting setup, ive only had one night so far to get things working together, but so far im getting good results, i know i still have more to get right as far as guiding goes, i just know that im going in the right direction

    Eric

p.s. there is a great show on National Geographic HD channel right now about the Hubble Space Telescope, lots of very good information about the images the scope has taken.
