    LRGB files

okay i have a Meade DSI and when i save the images as FITS files it saves them as a Lum, Red, Green, and Blue, when i take the images and construct an image from RGB files in photoshop, how would i add the "Lum" file to the image, could i use a different program? because with the option i have with PS CS3 it only lets me add 3 files, i know i should be able to somehow incorporate that "L" file into the image somehow, any help would be great..
    thanks,

    Eric

    Re: LRGB files

This thread has caught my attention as I have just begun my venture into photo processing using Photoshop CS2.  I found the above-referenced Waid-observatory tutorials quite helpful, at least in terms of understanding how to accomplish the LRGB final image.  I've not tried it yet, primarily because I have not yet dcaptured an image worthy of processing.

Having never used Photoshop, I am hopeful I might locate some source files which I might subject to Photoshop and see what I might accomplish. Regarding the source files (that's what I call the stacked files produced by the Autostar Suite and associated software), I have a question, as follows:  In my studies through various web sites, I got the idea that jpeg is the preferred file type to use in Photoshop (also I guess BMP is acceptable), and furthermore, I got the idea that FITS is not compatible with Photoshop.  From what I read here in this thread however, it sounds like FITS is okay.   Who might help me understand that confusio?.  Thanks.  Mike Pilgrim, Boca Raton, Fl

PS.  If anyone can send some source files for my learning adventure, please send to mpilgrim@bellsouth.net.

    Re: LRGB files

    Just a quick note...

I've found Autostar Image Proscessing Software doesa very nice job asembling RGBs from DSI or DSI Pro FITS files. The St.Dev. function doesa great job setting the initial color balance, I then use the RGB Gray Balance function to tweak the final color balance and I save the result as a BMP. I load the lum into PS7 using FITS Liberator, edit as needed, convert to 8-bit (required in PS7), copy the RGB over the lum, set the blending mode to Color. Voila! an LRGB image.
