North American and Pelican Nebulas

This is the photo I was working on the night that I snagged that quick shot of M31.

Taken with a TAK FSQ, and an STL-6303, Astrodon Ha filter.

10 x 30 minute exposures, processed in CCDStack. (Suffers just a little bit from jpg compression on this site.)

It is the start of what I hope to eventually be a tricolor narrowband.

North American and Pelican Nebulas - "Peter Rabbit" Presentation

(Suffers just a little bit from jpg compression on this site.) It is the start of what I hope to eventually be a tricolor narrowband.

For those of you with kids, this is the "Peter Rabbit" presentation. Original story by Beatrix Potter. This photo looks very much like the hand of Mr. McGregor reaching for - and missing - Peter Rabbit. If you look closely, you can see Peter Rabbit grinning as he gets away:

"Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail, who were good little bunnies, went down the lane to gather blackberries...but Peter, who was very naughty, ran straight to Mr. McGregor's garden and squeezed under the gate! First he ate some lettuce and some beans, and then he ate some radishes. On his way to find some parsley, whom should he meet but Mr. McGregor!

Mr. McGregor jumped up and ran after Peter, shouting, "Stop, thief!"

Peter was very frightened. He rushed all over the garden, for he had forgotten the way back to the gate. Unfortunately Peter ran into a gooseberry net and got caught by the large brass buttons on his jacket. Peter gave himself up for lost; but his sobs were overheard by some friendly sparrows, who flew to him in great excitement and begged him to try to free himself. Just as Mr. McGregor came up with a sieve, which he intended to pop on top of Peter, Peter wriggled out of his jacket, leaving it behind him."

M031 - Target of Opportunity, 2006

We actually had an exceptional night (for Boston, anyhow) the other night. After finishing up on my main target, M31 was right overhead, so I took the opportunity to image it.

Taken with an FSQ and STL-6303, this consists of only 12 x 1 minute luminance shots! Also have 6 x 1 minute binned 2x2 RGB, as well as a bit of additional color from last years' run.

Color is a little rough, but I was delighted at the sensitivity of the STL luminance shot.

The full-sized image is fairly large, at 75% of the original, but compressed a fair bit. CCDStack's deconvolution routines plus the hot/cold pixel rejection really helped in processing the luminance image.

NGC6888 - The Crescent Nebula, Which Pallet Choice?

These are variations on the choice of channel (R/G/B) for my Ha, OIII, and SII channels of NGC6888.

I have good Ha data at this point, but only very limited OIII and SII data, so perhaps the presentations are not as yet accurate. This object is strong in Ha, has an OIII "shell" around the main part of the object, and just a little SII.

Waddaya think?

Here a shot of M17, which is low in the sky in Boston, so it has really suffered from the poor skies, lately:

M17, HaR, HaRGB, TOA w/67FF, St-2000XM. This is 25 x 2min exposures each of R, G, and B. Also has 4 x 15min Ha shots. Done up as Ha/R as the L, and Ha+R/G/B.
