Messier 50 in Monoceros
Open cluster M50 is about 3,200 light years distant. Its angular
diameter of about 15x20'. The cluster is credited with containing approximately some 200 stars (credit: SEDS).
A quick check of the star depth captured by the DSI II Color camera in this image in Cartes du Ciel software using the HST star catalog reveals stars to about magnitude 15. It is significant to note that the mag 15 stars are present in exposures that did not burn out the brighter stars!
Equipment: DSI II Color, AT80ED 80mm APO @f/6.9. Meade IR filter. Guided by DSI Color on LX90@f/3.3.
Settings: 43 x 30s, gain=50, offset=50, captured in Envisage.
Post-processing: Drizzled in Envisage. RGB layers aligned in AIP4WIN. Levels, color balancing, curves and hi pass sharpening in Photoshop CS.
