ISS with STS-124 Docked - LX90 & Canon EOS

The International Space Station with Space Shuttle Discovery Docked!
June 11, 2008

A simply amazing sight captured from a telescope in a backyard observatory - The ISS with the space shuttle Discovery docked, but preparing to depart the station. This is the best of 45 images captured during the evening pass at 09:10:33p.m. CDT. It is a truly amazing image, considering that the station and shuttle were at the closest, a distance of 217 miles overhead and traveling at a speed exceeding 17,000mph!!

I hand-tracked the LX90 while viewing the ISS/Shuttle in the LX90's viewfinder, snapping the camera's shutter each time the pair were centered in the viewfinder cross-hairs. Now this is a nerve-wracking experience, trying to keep something centered in a 50mm viewfinder, that is traveling over 17,000mph!! Ah, but it is so worth the effort to see that first magic image downloaded from the camera :-)

Equipment: Canon 300D Digital EOS, ISO400, 1/1000s exposure, connected to Meade LX90 at prime focus f/10, 2000mm.
