Messier 40 - Double Star Winnecke 4 in Ursa Major
This faint double star is the only double to appear in the Messier Catalog. The two stars are separated by 52.8 seconds of arc, and the components are of visual magnitudes 9.0 and 9.3.
Equipment: Meade LX90 8" SCT@f/10, DSI Color camera, IR filter, Outback Cooler at 15°C - guided with DSI Color camera on Sky Watcher 80mm@f/5 guide scope mounted on LX90.
DSI Color Settings: 18 x 30s, gain=96, offset=50
Processing: Stacked in AS-IP, post-processed in Photoshop CS.
At the time M40 was imaged, a tornado was on the ground 50 miles to the northeast.
